Special Opening Hours at Stockholm Museums

The Vssa Museum (press image)
When it comes to museums in Stockholm, there are two important points to consider in regards to opening hours: some museums are closed on Mondays and many museums have at least one evening in the week when they are open late. International guests often ask if museums are closed on Sundays, but it is Mondays when this might be an issue in Stockholm. Also important... several museums have free entrance, or free admission to parts of the museum. So, in order to help you plan your Stockholm visit, I thought I would list the major museums in the city and if they close on Mondays, which evenings they stay open late and if they charge admission or not. In no specific order:

  • Vasa Museum- open daily, until 8pm on Wednesdays. Entrance fee.
  • Skansen- open daily. Open evenings on special holidays. Entrance fee.
  • Nordic Museum (Nordiska)- open daily, until 8pm on Wednesdays. Entrance fee (though free on Tuesdays after 1pm).
  • Prins Eugen Waldemarsudde- closed on Mondays, open until 8pm on Thursdays (even on Tuesdays between Sept 17th and Jan 21st). Entrance fee.

There are over 80 museums and attractions in Stockholm, so this is just a list of the most visited and well-known museums. If you are staying at the Hotel Rival, contact me if you need information about other museums. Keep in mind that this was written in September 2019 and the information is for the coming 8 months or so. This information is subject to change and will definitely change during the summer high season 2020 (when opening hours are usually expanded). To be certain, check the museum websites, which are linked above, to see precise opening hours.
