Free Ferry Between Riddarholmen and City Hall

Ferry arriving at Klara Mälarstrand by the City Hall.
Museums are starting to open up again for business, with restrictions. I will actually be going to visit Thielska Galleriet later this week and perhaps Fotografiska next week. I will be sure to report back and write about what they are showing and how it is to visit the museums under these special restrictions. In the meantime, here is something a bit more light and frivolous. Because, why not? Plus, I got some nice pictures which I wanted to share for inspiration!

Summer in the north is a time of construction with several building projects underway. One such project in the pedestrian/bicycle bridge (called Norra Järnvägsbron) connecting the island of Riddarholmen with the mainland, near Stockholm City Hall (Stadshuset). They are in the process of replacing it. To be honest, as a visitor, you would hardly notice this happening. The bridge is mainly used by local pedestrians, trying to avoid Gamla Stan as they travel between the downtown area and Södermalm. There are also several other bridges nearby to use, like Vasabron.

Then only reason I am really writing anything about this is because the city has put in a temporary ferry to carry people between the two points. I don't think you really make up any time taking the ferry instead of one of the other bridges, but it is a cute idea and it is always wonderful to get out on the water in Stockholm. Even better, there is no charge for the ferry! It just travels back and forth with the trip just taking five minutes. As a visitor it is especially nice as you get some great shots of the beautiful City Hall from the water.

I was out with a friend on one of my long walks to break up the dreariness of isolation and we took advantage of the ferry. We were one of the only passengers on the ferry... so plenty of great social distancing! If you are on a walk, take advantage of the beautiful waterfront walk right after the City Hall called Norr Mälarstrand. It is a popular promenade and the ferry is great way to get there if you are staying at the Hotel Rival! The new pedestrian bridge is supposed to be finished some time between the end of 2020 and beginning of 2021.
