Gamla Stan

Gamla Stan (Swedish for "old town") is both the physical and historical center of Stockholm. Located on a small island, with Lake Mälaren on one side and the Baltic Sea on the other, Gamla Stan is where Stockholm first grew into a town back in the 1200's. Besides being filled with cobblestone streets and beautiful medieval architecture, this is also where you will find the Royal Palace, main cathedral (Storkyrkan) as well as several museums, including the Nobel Center. And... it is only a 10-15 minute walk from Hotel Rival!

As a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, the streets and squares have been relatively empty of tourists over the past few months. While this provides a great opportunity to stroll through the historical alleys without being joustled by big tour groups, it has also hit the businesses in Gamla Stan extra hard. So, if you will be visiting us in the coming months, take advantage of the quiet streets but make sure you visit one of the many great museums, restaurants, cafés and shops in the area and show them some love!
