Restaurant Calle P
Ah... Calle P. The name of this restaurant is bit nostalgic for me and my generation. Located in Berzelli Park in the downtown area, this was the name of the restaurant back in the late 1980's and early 90's and was a popular place to go for dinner and drinks. After that, it went through a few changes in both name and ownership... but now some enterprising guys have taken over and changed the name back to the original Calle P. Feels right! I had a chance to revisit Calle P last week. with some colleagues.
The location in the park is pretty special for being in the middle of a large city, with large windows looking out over the park. And in the summertime they take advantage of the surroundings and open a large terrace with outdoor seating. No one is really sure where the name came from originally ("Calle" is short for Charles or Carl in Swedish). Some say that it was the name of a character in a play that was being shown at nearby China Theatre when they opened while others say that it was the name of an infamous man-about-the-town in the 1980's.
I would say that the cuisine is modern Swedish with a touch of Mediterranean and the menu is set up with medium sized dishes, split up between snacks, cold dishes, warm dishes and dessert. The waiter told us that most diners choose three to four dishes. We had four and that was more than enough! We started out with some snacks, followed by Steak Tartare and a delicious Cod. It was all very good and with great wine pairings.
Calle P is a small and popular restaurant so booking a table in advance is recommended. The easiest way to get there from Hotel Rival is by subway (redline four stations to Östermalmstorg, exit to Stureplan), though the closest station is Kungsträdgården on the blue line if you are coming from somewhere else. You could also take a 7-8 minute taxi/Uber from the hotel. Click here for other restaurant recommendations.
