Autumn Colors in Stockholm

Just because summer is over doesn't mean that you can't enjoy the outdoors in Stockholm. In fact, autumn (October, specifically) is one of my favorite times to take long walks in one of Stockholm's many parks and green areas. It is now that the leaves are all changing colors and on a nice, sunny day, it can be quite spectacular. 

You don't have to go far in Stockholm to visit a park. They say that a third of the surface area of the city is made up of green areas and no Stockholmer lives more than 300 meters from a park. Another third is taken up by water. But, if you really want to enjoy the autumn colors, there are some specific, larger parks that I prefer to visit than others. 

One of my favorites, and most central, is Djurgården. Djurgården is both the name of an island and a larger park that includes the island. The island is especially well known as it is the location of some of Stockholm's most famous attractions and museums, like the Vasa Museum, ABBA the Museum, Skansen and much more. You really can't visit Stockholm without a trip to Djurgården. And, when you are there, take some time to visit the acres of park, waterways and forests just beyond the attractions. The other major park is Haga Park, located on the northern outskirts of the city. This park surrounds the lake Brunnsviken, and also contains a lot of attractions and points of interest as well as acres of beautiful parklands and forests. A third great green area to visit is actually a cemetery... the Woodland Cemetery (Skogskyrkogården). This is a UESCO World Heritage Site and was designed by the Swedish architect Gunnar Asplund. In my opinion, it is at its most beautiful in autumn, especially around and on All Hallows Eve.
